What a time to go on a diet -- right before fall holiday season. Last year I tried the low-carb diet and the vegan diet, both to my dissatisfaction. This time, I’m following the Ornish diet, which is pretty much vegetarian, but allows egg whites and non-fat dairy products. Having already learned about how to up fiber and decrease use of processed sugar and flour, I’m finding this new diet plan both healthful and much easier to follow than the others. But the one factor that’s never been easy for me is the exercise part. You could say I’ve never been athletic, although I’m not a couch potato either.
For exercise success, I’ve posted the stationary bike in front of the television where I can forget I’m exercising while watching TV. Sitting right in front of my picture window, the bike does nothing for ambiance or house beautiful. And since I’m not giving any drivers-by a laughable view of Jellen from the rear or side, shades come closed when I hop on the bike. If you happen to drive by my house and see the living room shades drawn during the daytime, it’s just me working away at my daily 30 minutes on the recumbent bike.
With more than a few pounds to shed, I’ll most likely be at this for months. My main goal is to be heart healthy; hence, the lack of cholesterol in the diet. Hopefully, other health conditions will clear with improved diet and exercise. So what’s your health goal this year? Only four months remain to accomplish that 2008 New Year’s Resolution.
