Who can save Colin the baby whale?

A fascinating story is unfolding just north of the great city of Sydney. At this time of year whales migrate from the South Pole area all the way up the coast of Australia to the warmer waters closer to the Equator.

It is an long annual event where tourist operators reap the financial rewards of taking tourists out on the water to get close to the whales as they swim north.

In the last few days, in a waterway known as Pittwater, north of Sydney a baby whale which seems to be alone is causing great concern. It is a humpback whale, and the whereabouts of its mother is a mystery, but it is unlikely that the baby whale can survive without it's mother.

Oddly it is sucking on the hulls of yachts moored in the Pittwater, hoping that the the yacht is its mother. Yachties on board are naturally a bit concerned as the whale could cause quite a deal of damage to their boats, if it should choose to become violent.

But as they baby whale has obviously not found nourishment from the yachts, it is slowly dying. Without its mother's milk it will not survive.

Locals have come up with amazing ideas on how they can try to feed the baby, but the reality is that it would be a huge task to take on the feeding of a baby whale. Experts believe that there is nothing that can be done to save the whale, unless it's mother or a real surrogate can be found.

As each day passes, the chances of Colin's survival are diminished.

Final tale on Colin/Colleen the baby whale

Sadly the baby whale has been "put down" - the body of an adult whale (beleived to be its mother) has been found off the NSW coast. DNA tests will be done to determine the link between the two whales.
