What did I do at 39 years? Interesting question. Children 14, 13,12 and 7 years. Two at secondary school. Me? Ah, I remember now!
That was my last year in organised politics; I would not renew my membership of the NZ Labour Party again.
That was my second and last tilt at getting elected to the Lower Hutt City Council. I became disillusioned with some people in the party in any case.
One year later David Lange, a brilliant orator if there ever was one, led the NZ Labour Party to its fourth victory and became prime minister and leader of a government that became very controversial for two things later: It created New Zealand's anti- nuclear policy which exists to this very day, and created a market economics policy which included massive privatisation of state enterprises. Something I couldn't and never have supported. Maybe I smelt something in the air back in 1983. In 1990 I voted against the Labour Party for the first time since 1972.
Since then I have become independent in my support for social democracy. I have been a great supporter through the use of the written word though!
