Umbrella City

China does things on a GRAND scale. Everyone who has seen vision of the Olympic venues, and the footage of great places around China would have to agree.

Almost everyone who speaks with me about China asks about the pollution. It is real. It is frightening. You can see (and sometimes feel) the air clogged with dust and other pollutants. The numbers of people reported to die each ear from pollution related diseases is high! Perhaps there are more that go unreported too.

When one visits the areas where the factories are - around the big cities - it is an awesome sight. The factories are row upon row - bigger than anything we see here. They are huge buildings that go on an on. And most have buildings where staff are accommodated too.

Perhaps this will give you some idea. There is a place called Shangyu - fairly new development I understand. Shangyu is known as "The Umbrella City". Why? There are reportedly 1000 Umbrella factories in the area.

Amazing!

(If you visit the website - just read the collection of other industries that share Shangyu with the umbrella factories.)

We get pollution on a minor...

scale in Christchurch in the South Island of NZ sometimes. It is very flat. China must be 50 times as bad.

That is one thing that we noticed there

that sometimes there is no breeze - the air is still. Hence the pollution just seems to hang in the atmosphere. Also when flying into Shanghai from way up high the clouds looked yellow below.

Air pollution

It was interesting to read about what China had to do with shutting down pollutants prior to the games in hope of managing air quality. I wonder if the winds undid any of the efforts?
