Time for Privacy not Publicity

First off, let me say, I deeply appreciate the strength of character of Elizabeth Edwards, wife of former democratic presidential candidate John Edwards. Although some in the media would like to put her down for keeping her private life private, I stand behind her desire to protect her children and her family from scandal. I applaud her ability to forgive and her attempt to work on reconciliation in her marriage.

What I find difficult to understand about the situation is why anyone with something private to hide, would seek public office. Certainly the info would come out eventually. After all, the other woman exists -- not to mention others in the info loop. I guess what I am not understanding is why when there was so much more to loose, why did the candidate continue the course? We all know indiscretions happen, but when the indiscretions happen to public officials, the news gets out in the worst way.

What I would like to see happen is the media move on and leave the main victim in all this to heal in her own way, to let the children and the family heal in their own way. I'm not sure there is any great political future for John Edwards, and I'm not sure how long Elizabeth Edwards will battle her cancer, but I do know that the children have a future. Why should they feel a father's embarrassment well into their futures?

It's time to let the family be family and do what family does best. It's time for privacy not publicity. John Edward may never win a character award for his past behavior, nor an award for his ability to cover up indiscretions, but he does have a chance to win the humble pie award. He has a chance to relinquish his political leadership goals and aspirations and become the leader of his family, beginning with his most humble sincere apology from the depths of a truly repentant husband and father.

We all agree...

Well said Jellen

I am often amazed to see people seek high public office with skeletons in their "cupboard" that they seem to conveniently "forget". It is embarrassing to all when it comes out, and often a waste of time and money.

Agreed, Hutts

That's why I can't imagine anyone with a secret to hide, running for political office.

Yes, if you want to be in...

public life you have to be prepared for discussion on your family or private life sometime down the track.
