I wrote about a recent Australian issue where there was a lot of publicity about a shortage of women in a mining area of Mt Isa, and I've written about a shortage of women in China.
In China, the one-child policy is what has caused much of their problem - and I think the country is right to restrict the number of children there. Already the population there is so huge and they do struggle to manage the numbers of people in the country. Whilst many do not like the way that the one-child policy is "managed" with the number of abortions etc, especially the "forced" abortions, I do not know what else they could do there.
In Australia the shortage of women has a different cause. I'm not sure what the numbers are - and I am not sure that there is a disparity between the numbers of men and women, but certainly there seems to be a shortage of women in certain places. I know some women will clam that there is a shortage of men. (I think they mean "men ready for marriage" though.)
In Australia there is a popular television program called "The Farmer wants a wife" that helps out those men who work hard on their farms and have little opportunity to meet women - most of the local women seem to have found a partner.
Read about this program here.
Maybe this has been a problem for ever. I know that in many societies males are more highly prized by families, and I know that males have more importance in many western societies.
Science and technology have combined to give parents information on the gender of their foetus, but I'm not sure that this is necessarily a good thing.
It will be interesting to watch how this inequality of genders is played out over future years. I'm sure China has a BIG problem to deal with.
