My cat has 7 toes, and this cat may also be a genius!

Freaky cat toes

Take a good look at the paws of my cat, Trantor. As you will see, his feet are unusual. In fact, Trantor has two extra twos on all four of his paws.

This is a genetic mutation known as polydactylism. It's not extrmely rare among cats, but somewhat unusual. Legend has it that cats with extra toes were much prized my ship's captains in the old days because they were considered good luck -- and they were also excellent rat catchers.

Meaty paws

It is a well-known fact that the great writer Ernest Hemingway was the owner of several polydactyl cats. This is somewhat cosmic for me because I make my living as a freelance writer.

* Hemingway was a writer -- owned polydactyl cat.
* Ken is a writer -- ownes a polydactyl cat.

Do you see the obvious connection here?

I also believe this cat is a genius. He does not act like a normal cat -- he seems much smarter than a dog. Consider:

* He knows how to open doors by using the door handle.

* He knows how to turn on the water faucet to get a drink.

* He once tricked a bird into flying right into his mouth.

* He once showed my little dog how to catch a squirrel.

Here's my theory: Since a cat can be born with extra toes -- it does not seem a stretch that he could also have grown an extra lobe on his brain, giving him more brain power, and thus more intelligent.

Finally, I think it is more than fair to say that anyone who ownes a polydactyl cat, and that cat is also a genius, really has something going for himself in life.

Yes, that's me. Ken: The man who owns a genius polydactyl cat.
