Michael Phelps smoked marijuana and I don’t care. Phelps needs too stop apologizing because he really has nothing to apologizes for.
Why should Michael Phelps apologize for relaxing with his friends doing something that according too all the statistics I’ve seen is safer then dinking beer.
Michael Phelps is young and like many young people he is feeling his way through life. God forbid a young man might make a mistake and try marijuana. It’s not like he is the first person too experiment with pot and he wont be the last one.
Come on people lets leave Michael Phelps alone.

It is illegal,
so the goldfish was caught. These guys are "role models" or supposed to be, because of their high profile, so he deserved the flack.

Tall Poppies...
as successful people are often called here, are like goldfish in a tank - they stand out and are noticeable. You can sympathise with him because he did what a lot of young people do - smoke dope! Its illegal, a damn awful habit and has nothing to recommend it anyway. A champ he may be, but he has always been a bit of an ADHD dickhead, apparently!

Those that take the spotlight will have it
even in the places they don't want it. Michael is big enough to take credit for his deeds and responsibility for his misdeeds. And what he did is illegal.

Your right it is
Your right it is illegal...but if the only thing bad about pot is that it is illegal I say mabye we should consider changing the law....
cuz regardless of the legal issues Pot is safer then beer
One thing about consequences
Toad, I see where you are coming from, but I have to agree with Jeanne on this one. If marajuana were legal, it would be a different story. When he drank, he was probably within the law to drink. But when he got behind the wheel, he broke the law. Breaking laws should have consequences, or as Jeanne said, few would abide by the laws.
To be caught by a photographer, while smoking an illegal substance, meant a crime had been committed. There was proof.
In today's cell phone cameras, there is little room for privacy anywhere. A picture can be shot by a "good friend" for the money it would bring, with a celebrity.
But it's not about behaving because you don't want to get caught. That's what's wrong with a world short on integrity. His actions came with a price. He broke the law, believing himself above it or at no risk from it. Sadly, he found out otherwise and did serious injury to his reputation and probably his financial life.
When we just forgive seemingly minor criminal behavior because someone was just "letting off steam," what does that say to our young people who look to him as a role model?
We need our younger generations to have integrity, to do what's right according to the laws of our land. We need celebrities to hold high standards and integrity. And we need celebrities, who when caught in the wrong on camera, don't just apologize for the pictures, but apologize for behavior.
Respectfully Toad, that's my response to the discussion.
Toad, even young people should learn to abide by the law.
Michael Phelps broke the law, and, according to the news article, it wasn't the first time. He had been arrested earlier for driving after drinking.
If we all obey only the laws we agree with, many people will stop wearing seat belts or helmets when they ride motorcycles. There will be people breaking the speed limit because they feel that they are good enough drivers to control their cars at higher speeds. Others may decide that it is okay to build a campfire in a dry forest because they will make sure the fire is out when they leave, even though signs are posted that no fires are allowed.
I know that a lot of people think that smoking pot is a minor crime, but until the law against it is changed, citizens will either have to obey it or suffer the consequences when they disobey it.
