Mt Isa, in Quensland Australia is a dusty, hot, dirty mining city. The area around Mt Isa is rich with mineral deposits, and much of the economy of the area comes from the huge mines in the area.

The city itself has a population of some 25,000 and is quite a progressive - but it has a major problem. There is a major shortage of females.

The mayor of Mt Isa has recently come under fire because he went to the press with the story that Mt Isa needed more women and that "beauty disadvantage women" were welcome to move to the city.

The locals are upset about the mayor's comments, and have been holding protest meetings.

There are some who are in support of the mayor, despite his comments, as the reality is that this shortage of women is causing a number of social problems.

It is a problem throughout the world, where there are major shortages of women. In China it is becoming a huge problem, as families have set out to have only boys because that is what they believe that their ancestors want. As well, as there is a one child policy, so once a family has their "son and heir", they can no longer add to their family.

I wonder if there is a population that has a shortage of women?
