It has occurred to me to write this post as we have newcomers to BE – who are most welcome of course – and it is a question that comes up from time to time. I did a Google Search on the topic and found some interesting information that I will pass on here.

Here in China our English students choose an English name. This is to make it easy for the English teacher, and help us to ensure that the right student gets the right marks. We cannot easily write or recognise Chinese characters (writing) and even writing in Pinyin is difficult.

The China Daily website is one of my daily reads. As I can't read the local newspapers, I find this site helpful in keeping up to date with things in China. They do have printed newspaper, but I would have to go into the city to find one. The website is easier - despite my Internet woes.

Irritating Computers.

I'm having computer trouble. AGAIN!! This time I think the problem is purely the Internet Service here. There has been a major computer examination in the university and we had suspected that there would be some problems with the Internet/computer system.

Fire in Shanghai School - students killed

I read on China Daily this morning that at least four students were killed in a college fire in Shanghai this morning. How tragic! It appears that they were not killed by the fire, but by jumping from the 6th floor of their dormitory block.

One way that I have been keeping in touch with my family in Australia from China is via Skype. It's been great as I can see my husband, my daughter, my son, and their families. Yes, the grand children have been able to talk with me too.

I was out with one of my students and she was uncomfortable about it. "People just STARE at you." she said with an emphasis on the word STARE.

It doesn't matter what I do outside the college campus I am always watched or stared at. I'm used to it. It does unnerve my students however, but I can laugh it off. Initially it was a bit hard to take.

Wine and "inkohol"

One of the things that I miss is a good glass of wine. Here in China it is hard to come by. And expensive if you can buy some.

My friends all enjoy a beer, but they too are keen to get home for a glass of real beer rather than the pale weak beer that is available here. In any case I do not like beer. I have tried it - but I just can't do it. I'd rather go thirsty!

I am looking at increasing my income through my blogging, so being a little more interested than usual in what other successful bloggers are doing. I've long been a fan of Darren Rouse of Problogger fame, and do receive his newsletters, but do not always act on the wise information therein. (I am not an affiliate or anything, so I get no reward for promoting the site!)

News reports from Indonesia report that the three men behind the terrorist attack who were known as the "Bali Bombers" were executed by firing squad on Sunday.

This report from ABC News Islamist militants Mukhlas, Amrozi and Imam Samudra were executed by firing squad in the early hours of Sunday for masterminding the 2002 attacks which killed 202 people, including 88 Australians.
