A bird landed on my head!

How can I tell this story? What shall I call it? A Bird landed on my head? A bird on the head is worth....? Oh, what the heck! I'll tell the story just as it happened.

Late this afternoon I was about to walk up the back stairs when something with claws landed on my head! This is magpie swooping time, when many magpies are nesting and as they do at this time, swoop down and try and peck humans as they walk past.

So when I felt feathers and claws on my head, I initially felt fear. I screamed. And then this bird landed on my back. I could feel it's claws piercing the skin on my back. And then within seconds a bird appeared on the stairs.

There was a cute little cockatiel just looking at me.

These little birds are popular pets here - they are trained to sit on one's shoulder, talk and do other tricks.

Now this dear little bird could be pecked and killed by wild birds. Crows, magpies, miner birds and others would attack it and soon kill it.

I held my hand out and the little bird jumped onto my hand and raced up my arm and made itself comfortable on my shoulder.

I walked into the laundry and closed the door - knowing that it would now be safer. What to do now??

Here I was with a bird on my shoulder and no idea what to do. I suggested my husband phone our regular friendly veterinary clinic where we are well known. They suggested that we bring him in.

With my husband's help, we caught the bird and put it in a dog cage, and I drove the cockatiel to the vet.

He came out of his cage and with a spring in his "step" he made himself comfortable on the shoulder of the vet nurse.

It was sad to say goodbye to him - but they will endeavour to find his owner, and in the mean time care for him.

I hope there is a happy ending for the bird.

They are one of the worst Aussie...

immigrants here in Kiwiland. Good story, Elly. I haven't had a bird land on me, but I have been bombed by seagull shite.

Good lead, Elly

I was prepared for the worst and then relieved with the ending. Great post.

Alfred Hitchcock would be proud of that story, Elly

I had no idea magpies are so aggressive. Glad they don't live around south Texas.

Some magpies are very aggressive

and swoop down on anyone walking or cycling past their nest - which is very high in the tallest gumtree and well away from harm by humans. They have long sharp beaks and many a child has had to fend one off. People wear icecream containers with eyes painted on them, as "hats" around regulra maggie sites, and the council puts up signs warning of magpies in spring. Golfers, walkes, cyclists are often attacked and some injuries are serious. (e.g. eye, scalp etc)

Every place has its danger, Elly

Magpie swoop danger there, seagull poop danger here.
